Exponents- the basics

Monday, October 31, 2016

An exponent tells how many of the base numbers get multiplied together.

The base number is the number being multiplied times itself.

4^3  the 4 is the base

 The 3 is the exponent

You read this as "4 to the 3rd power."

This  means you have THREE FOURS multiplied

  = 4 x 4 x 4 = 64

Squared means the exponent is "2" or you can say "number to the second power."

Cubed means the exponent is "3" of you can say "number to the third power."

If the exponent is zero (0), the product will equal 1
