This simulation of the cell cycle is a great way to learn the cell cycle. The cell cycle includes interphase, then mitosis which consists of Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase, and then concludes with Cytokenisis.
Materials Needed
- Three colors of yarn
- Masking Tape
- Print out of the Cell
- Scissors
- Print out of the Cell Cycle
Step 1.
For interphase you need to cut 6 small pieces of the yarn including two pieces of each color.
During interphase, the DNA makes a copy of itself and it is represented by the pieces of yarn.
Step 2.
For prophase you will need another 6 pieces of yarn which includes two pieces of each color.
In this step you will create chromosomes by taping two pieces of the same color together with the masking tape. The masking tape repesents the centromeres.
Step 3.
For metaphase you will need another 6 pieces of yarn which includes two pieces of each color. In this step you will create chromosomes by taking two pieces of the same color together with the masking tape. The masking tape repesents the centromeres.
In this step the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell.
Step 4.
For anaphase you will need another 6 pieces of yarn which includes two pieces of each color.
In this step you will create chromosomes by taking two pieces of the same color together with the masking tape. The masking tape repesents the centromeres.
During anaphase the chromosomes break apart and move away from one another.
The spindle fibers pull the chromosomes in opposite directions.
For this step just cut the chromosomes you created in half.
Step 5.
For telophase you will need another 6 pieces of yarn which includes two pieces of each color.
In this step you will create chromosomes by taking two pieces of the same color together with the masking tape. The masking tape repesents the centromeres.
In telophase the chromosomes are on opposite ends of the cell and a nuclear envelope begins to form around the chromosomes. Draw this in with a marker.
Step 6.
For this step you need 6 pieces of yarn consisying of two of the same color.
Draw a line down the center to represent two new daughter cells forming.
