Converting in the Metric System

How to convert units within the metric system.

The metric system is a decimal system of measurement. This means it is based on the number 10.
For example,

100,000 millimeters = 10,000 centimeters = 1000 decimeters = 100 meters

A simple method of converting is to learn to move the decimal point to the left of right.

In the example above here is how this was converted.

Meter   Decimeter   Centimeter  Millimeter

I started at millimeter and moved the decimal three places to the right.
Therefore, 100,000 became 100.

Let's look at another example of converting in the metric system.

1 kilometer = meters

Kilo Hecto Deka meter deci centi milli

Kilo is on the left and meter is three spaces to the right.

Therefore, I move the decimal three spaces to the right.
1 kilometer = 1000 meters.

One final example,

10 centimeters = kilometers

Kilo Hecto Deka meter deci centi milli

Kilometers is 5 spaces to the right of centimeters.

10. centimeters = move 5 spaces to the right =  .0001 kilometers
