Flowchart for Adding Subtraction Integers-6th grade Math

Use this flow chart to take the guesswork out of adding and subtracting integers.



Welcome to MooMooMath and a flowchart to help with addition and subtraction of integers.

This flowchart will help by asking simple yes no questions and remembering a couple of simple rules.

Let's get started

The first question you ask is, is the problem addition?

Yes or no

If you answer yes then, are the signs the same?

Yes or No

If you answer yes then ad the numbers and keep the sign of the two numbers.

If you answer no then subtract the smaller number from the larger number and keep the sign of the large number.

Is the problem addition?

No change the subtraction sign to addition, and change the sign of the first number after the subtraction sign

Finally, follow the addition rules.

Let's work some example problems so we can see how the flowchart works in adding and subtracting positive and negative integers.

Let's go ahead and apply the flowchart to adding and subtracting integers that are positive and negative.

Is the problem addition? yes or no

.Next we ask, are the signs the same?

Yes then all we do is add the two numbers and 8+5 = 13

Use the sign of the two numbers, so it becomes negative 13

Let's apply the flowchart to another problem

13+ negative 9

Is the problem addition?

Yes

Are the signs the same?

No

We will subtract the smaller number from the larger number 13-9 = 4, and take the sign of the larger number which is 13 so it becomes positive 4

Let's apply the flowchart again.

Is the problem addition? yes

Are the signs the same? yes

Add the two numbers together 16+4 = 20

Take the sign of the two numbers which is negative 20

The flowchart takes much of the guesswork out , and I find it cuts down on mistakes

Is the problem addition? No

I will change the subtraction to addition

Next I will change the sign of the number directly behind the subtraction sign

The 7 becomes a -7

Is the problem addition? yes

Are the signs the same? yes

Add 5 + 7 = 12

Next I will take the sign of the two numbers which is negative, so it becomes negative 12

Next we -6 -12

Is the problem addition? No

I will change the subtraction sign to addition.

It will become -6 + -12

Is the problem addition? yes

Are the signs the same?

yes

Add the numbers 6+12 = 18

Take the sign of the two numbers

Last problem

-15 + 8

Is the problem addition? yes

Are the signs the same? No

Subtract the smaller number from the larger number 15-8 = 7

I then will take the sign of the larger number which is 15

The answer will be -7
