digestive systems

On average it takes 12 hours to digest our food. The food has to travel through the small intestine which is roughly 20 feet long, and then the large intestine which is about 5 feet long.

Digestion starts in the mouth with mechanical and chemical digestion. The food moves down the esophagus and enters the stomach. The stomach has strong acids that continue to break down the food. Pancreatic enzymes are released as the food enters the small intestines along with bile. From the small intestines, the food enters the large intestines and exits the body.
