Math Words-Reciprocal and Multiplicative Inverse

Thursday, January 7, 2016

A reciprocal can also be called a multiplicative inverse.

The reciprocal of a number is created by dividing one by the number.
For example the reciprocal of 8 equals 1/8

When you have a fraction you can create it’s reciprocal by flipping the fraction.
For example the reciprocal is 2/3 = 3/2
Or the reciprocal of   3/4 = 4/3

Any number times its reciprocal equals 1

Use a reciprocal when solving an equation when the coefficient of the variable is a fraction.

2/3x = 4
Multiply both sides by the reciprocal
(3/2*2/3x) = 3/2*4
X = 6

A reciprocal is also used when you divide fractions
You Keep Change Flip
2/3 ÷ 3/4 = 2/3 x 4/3
