I love the podcast “ How I Built This with Guy Raz” which interviews people who start many of the companies we are familiar with. In every episode, I’m amazed at the number of obstacles these people must overcome to reach their goals.

For example, Sal Khan of Khan Academy quit his high paying job to start Khan Academy and after 5 months he had no large donors, a mortgage, and bills to pay, was so worried about his finances he literally couldn’t sleep. But he faced these obstacles and overcame them.

Let's take a quick look at phylum Mollusca
Mollusks are invertebrates that are found in the ocean, in freshwater, and on land.
Almost all mollusks have these common traits.

  • A soft body and bilateral symmetry
  • An internal or external shell
  • A toothed tongue called the radula The radula is used by mollusks for feeding and is sometimes compared to a tongue. The radula is found in every class of mollusks except bivalves.
  • Mollusks have a mantle which is a covering of the visceral mass. The visceral mass contains the digestive, excretory, and reproductive organs.
  • An organized nervous system
  • A muscular foot that may be used for movement

Let's take a look at three major classes of gastropods

Gastropods

Gastropods have a head and a foot. Although the name "snail"  is, applied to all the members of this class, commonly this word means only those species with an external shell. Those gastropods without a shell are usually known as slugs.
Gastropods have an extraordinary diversification of habitats.
They live in gardens, woodland, deserts,  and even in the depths of the oceans. 

Bivalves

Bivalves are mollusks that have two shells.
Some common examples are clams, oysters, mussels, and scallops. Bivalves are found in saltwater, as well as freshwater.
They do not have a head and most are filter feeders.

Cephalopods

Have a prominent head, body, foot and a set of arms or tentacles. Animals in this class are carnivorous predators and have beak-like jaws. All cephalopods have a very well-developed nervous system along with eyes.
Several have the ability to change colors quickly.
Examples include,octopus,squid,and cuttlefish
The cuttlefish is famous for having the ability to change its color to blend into almost any background.

Your digestive system is an amazing group of organs that break down food into simple substances that can be absorbed by your body.
On average it takes 1 to 2 days for food to move from through your entire digestive system including the colon varies from 40 to 50 hours.

Digestion can be broken down into two different types, mechanical and chemical.

Mechanical digestion is breaking down food physically when you chew. Imagine taking a large piece of paper and ripping it into small pieces. The physical digestion exposes more surface area which aids chemical digestion.
Chemical digestion is the breaking down of food chemically. Your body secretes several enzymes and acids as the food passes along the digestion tract to break the food down.




Why does it take so long to digest our food?

Your digestive tract is long. In fact, your small intestine is roughly 3 times your height or around 20 feet long, and the large intestine is roughly your height or 5 feet long.
This allows your body to absorb the maximum amount of nutrition from your food.

Your food moves through your digestive tract due to the action of smooth muscles.

Your stomach contains lots of mucus.

Most of the major digestion takes place in the small intestines.

Your small intestines are longer than your large intestines.

Your small and large intestines have huge numbers of bacteria.

Chemical digestion actually starts in the mouth.

You can swallow food upside down due to the smooth muscles in your esophagus.

Your colon absorbs water during digestion which helps to keep you hydrated.

The small intestine is so long it is divided into three parts called the Duodenum, Jejunum, and Ileum.

Saliva produced in the mouth is the first location of chemical digestion.

What is the structure and function of the cytoplasm in a cell?


The cytoplasm is a fluid found in cells and the organelles are suspended in this liquid.
Think of the cytoplasm like the water that fills up a swimming pool and the organelles would be the people who swim in the pool.
The cytoplasm is found in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.
The fluid of the cytoplasm is called cytosol.
The organelles are found floating in this liquid.
Along with the cytoskeleton, the cytoplasm helps give the cell it’s shape. Think of filling up a water balloon.
Without cytoplasm, the cell would be deflated and materials would not be able to pass easily from one organelle to another.
In addition, there are important molecules dissolved in the cytosol.
You will find enzymes, glucose, fatty acids, sugars, and amino acids that are used to keep the cell working. Waste products are also dissolved before they are taken in by vacuoles or sent out of the cell.
The cytoplasm is also the site of ATP production through the process of glycolysis when glucose is converted into pyruvate and 2 ATPs are generated.
In addition, the enzymes found in the cytosol help break down larger molecules.
So there you go, the very important fluid of living cells, the cytoplasm.

In this animated video I would like to talk about Polygons

Polygons are 2-dimensional closed shapes.

A closed shape does not have any openings, and all of the lines connect.

You can’t leave the inside of a closed shape without crossing a line.

Polygons have straight lines and do not have curves

A polygon has three parts.

Straight Lines

Vertices which are the point at which the lines intercept

Angles are formed by intercepting lines



There are several types of polygons

A regular polygon has equal lines and angles

An irregular does not have equals lines and angles



A concave polygon has one angle greater than 180 degrees

A convex polygon does not have any internal angles greater than 180 degrees



A simple polygon does not have any lines that cross over.

A complex polygon has at least one line that crosses over itself

Named after the number of sides and angles

Triangle 3 sides

Quadrilateral

Pentagon 5

Hexagon 6

Heptagon 7

Octagon 8

Nonagon 9

Decagon 10

Hendecagon 11

Dodecagon 12

After 12 sides it is acceptable to give the number of sides and then gon

Science Variables





How are the independent and dependent variables different?

This video reviews each of the following examples.



An Independent variable ( also called the manipulated variable) has the ability to stand alone. It is not changed by the other variables. It is the variable you are changing or manipulating.

The Dependent variables ( also called the responding variables) depends on the other variables.It is the variable you are measuring.

Let’s look at some examples,



It is summertime. You would like to know if the color of the car impacts the inside temperature of a car. You find four cars of different colors and park them outside.
You measure the inside temperature every 30 minutes for two hours.

The color of the cars is your independent variable. It is the item you are changing or manipulating. It will not change based on the outside temperature. You are changing this variable by choosing four colors.

The change in the temperature inside your car  is your dependent variable. It may vary according to the car’s color. You will be measuring this variable by taking the temperature inside the car.

Does the height of a tree depends on the amount of water it receives?

The amount of water the tree receives is the independent variable and the height of the tree is the dependent variable because it depends on the amount of water it receives and you are measuring the height of the tree. The dependent variable is what you are measuring?

Does eating five servings of bananas a week, reduced the blood pressure of male patients?
The number of bananas the men eat each week is your independent variable, and the blood pressure is the dependent variable.

When graphing the independent and dependent variables you can remember which axis they go on by using DRY MIX
