Orbit of the Earth

Wednesday, November 24, 2021

Are you aware that there are actually three methods for measuring how long it takes for the earth to revolve around the sun?

The Earth revolves in a counterclockwise direction around the Sun.

clockwise and counter-clockwise
It also orbits in a prograde manner which means it revolves and rotates in the same direction.

There are actually three methods of measuring how long it takes the Earth to revolve around the Sun.

First, there is the sidereal method  One complete orbit takes 365.256 days during which time
the Earth has traveled 940 million km (584 million mi) and measures a complete revolution around the sun compared to the stars

Another method is called the tropical method  A tropical year is 365.24219 days and is the time from one vernal equinox to the next.

An anomalistic year is 365.259636 days and is the time from perihelion to perihelion
The perihelion is the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is closest to the sun

The Earth’s orbital speed around the sun is about 67,000 mph (107,000 km/h).

There is one slight problem with this orrery it shows the Earth traveling in a circle however the Earth's orbit is an ellipse and the earth has an average distance of 149.60 million km (92.96 million mi) from the sun.

Rates of Reaction for Beginners-Chemistry

Monday, November 15, 2021

In order for a chemical reaction to occur, there must be enough energy to break the bonds that hold the particles together in a molecule. The speed at which new particles form is called the rate of reaction.

Before a skateboard will move energy must be applied to cause the skateboard to move.

In a similar manner, a chemical reaction must also have a boost in energy in order to get the reaction to occur.

This boost of energy is called activation energy and is the least amount of energy needed in order to get molecules to react.

activitation energy

Think of a match. The match has all of the reactants it needs to burn but you must strike the match, which provides friction which creates heat, which provides the activation energy needed to start the reaction.

What are some factors that affect the rate of reactions?

There are four factors that impact the rate of reaction.

Temperature, Concentration, Surface area, and an Inhibitor or Catalyst.

factors impact rate reaction

Temperature The higher the temperature the faster the rate of reaction. As temperature rises the particles of the reactants move quickly which causes the particles to collide more often and with greater energy so many reactants can change into particles in a short time

Concentration  In general a high concentration of reactants will cause a fast rate of reaction. Concentration is the measure of the amount of one substance dissolved into another. When concentration is high the particles are close to each other which increases how often the reactants collide and the reaction accelerates.

Surface area Increasing the surface area of solid reactants increases the rate of reaction.

A greater surface area exposes more of the reactants to other reactants thus increasing the rate of reaction. For example, grinding a solid into a powder increases the surface area and speeds up the rate of reaction.

Inhibitors an inhibitor is a substance that slows down the rate of a reaction There are three common types of inhibitors

Corrosion inhibitor: A corrosion inhibitor decreases the rate of oxidation of the metal.

Enzyme inhibitor: In chemistry and biology, an enzyme inhibitor binds to an enzyme, lessening its activity.

Reaction inhibitor: A reaction inhibitor is any substance that decreases the rate of a chemical reaction.

A catalyst is a substance that speeds up a reaction It does this by lowering the activation energy of a reaction. Some enzymes in your body are catalysts and speed up chemical reactions.

Activities to Help Your Brain

Thursday, November 11, 2021

Are you aware that the brain has the ability to modify its connections or re-wire itself? In other words, it is constantly changing and possibly improving.

Your brain is not a static part of your body and due to the property of plasticity, it can change, learn new material, and even become more efficient. Help keep your brain happy and stimulated with these 14 brain-boosting activities

Number 1 Learn to play a musical instrument like the guitar or the drums. Learning how to play a musical instrument stimulates the brain and reduces harmful stress

Number 2 Feed the brain with this healthy shake of bananas, blueberries and kale. the berries have been proven to help keep the brain happy.

Number 3 Learn to speak a new language think of learning a new language like exercise for the brain it strengthens the brain and helps prevent long-term memory loss

Number 4 Try brushing your teeth with the opposite hand. Learning a new tasks helps to stimulate the brain which is good for your brain.

Number 5  Solve puzzle-solving puzzles and riddles or math problem is a great exercise for the brain.

Number 6  Learn a new dance routine. This task helps reduce stress, stimulates the brain, and increases your heart rate. All three of these activities are great for your brain and your health.

Number 7 Memorize numbers This could be birthdays of important family members, phone numbers, the digits of pi. This will stimulate the brain and you will find that you will get much better at memorizing numbers.

Number 8 Take time to meditate daily. Meditation has been found to increase gray matter in your hippocampus and prefrontal cortex.

Number 9  Go for a walk by yourself with a friend or a pet. Exercise improves many cognitive functions in your brain and increases your ability to deliver oxygen to your brain. Exercise will do the brain well and has been found to improve the executive function of the brain. Your hippocampus will say thank you.

Number 10  Send a thank-you card or a private message to one of your friends or family members to help lower your stress. Giving back to others is a great de-stressor. Stress causes your cortisone levels to increase which can have a negative long-term effect on your brain.

Number 11 Learn a new vocabulary word each day. Similar to memorizing numbers, it is an exercise for the brain.

Number 12 Try to find a new use for an item that you normally recycle or throw away.

This task requires creativity which strengthens and stimulates both sides of the brain.

Kindness Challenge Day 4 - Just say thank you

Today's suggestion is to just say thank you to the people around you. This simple gesture begins to reprogram your brain to think kindness. At the end of practice, you can say thank you to your coach. At school, say thanks at the end of your class to the teacher. I know as a teacher I rarely had students say thanks at the end of class. I also know it gave me a little encouragement when a student did say thank you to me and I was always impressed with this student.
This simple gesture shows kindness to others around you and tells other people that you value them.

be kind to others

How do you feel when someone says thank you to you?

Make a list of 5 people you could say thank you to today.

At  @MooMooMath and Science, we end our videos with kindness multiplies kindness. In each of my #shorts I like to tell a quick Kindness story in order to inspire myself and others to practice kindness.

Acts of kindness make a lasting positive impact on the people around you.

How to Balance Chemical Equations

How to Balance Chemical Equations

A chemical equation is balanced when you have the same number of atoms for the reactants and the products.

You can balance chemical equations by following these simple steps.

Step 1. Draw a vertical line from the arrow.

balancing chemical equations

Step 2. Count the number of atoms for the reactants and the products.
When you have a coefficient in front of one or more elements you multiply the coefficient for all of the elements. A subscript only applies to the element it is written at the end of. The coefficient will also be multiplied by the subscript.

balance chemical equations

Step 3. Start with the metals and use coefficients so that the number atoms are equal for reactants and products. On the periodic table the metals are found on the left and the transition metals are in the middle and nonmetals are on the right.

Remember you cannot change subscripts only coefficients.

balance chemical equations

Step 4. Get the number of nonmetal atoms balanced for the reactants and products. Again, you can only change the coefficients and not the subscripts.

balance chemical equations

Step 5. Balance the remaining elements like hydrogen by changing coefficients.

balance chemical equations

If you have two products and reactants unequal then try this. Find the smallest number they both divide evenly into and then divide the subscripts into this number.

For example, you have 3 Chlorines on the reactant side and 4 Chlorines on the product side. Then 12 is the smallest number they both divide into. Once you have this number you can divide the subscripts into this number in order to know what the coefficient needs to be.

You would have a coefficient of 4 on the ractant side, and a coefficient of 3 on the product side.

Day 3 of the Kindness Challenge

Take the kindness challenge. Being kind to the people around can be a learned skill. The more often you are kind to others the easier it becomes to default to being kind as opposed to being rude.
In order to make the 10-day kindness challenge easier, I will make a suggestion for what you can do.

Day 3

Today's suggestion is to just write a simple note to encourage someone in your life. It can be as simple as " have a great day." If you would like to do something different you can give someone you know a positive shout-out on social media.

Questions to discuss

Think of your last five social media posts. How many of those posts were positive, and how many were negative?

Think of the last time someone left you a positive or kind note. How did the note make you feel?

At  @MooMooMath and Science, we end our videos with kindness multiplies kindness. In each of my #shorts I like to tell a quick Kindness story in order to inspire myself and others to practice kindness.

Day 2

Today's suggestion is to compliment or encourage the people around you. For example, my daughter is a kindergarten teacher and it is an important but difficult job. I can text her a quick note reminding her that she is a positive influence on her students. This only takes a minute or so but may put a smile on her face and remind her why she went into teaching.

Questions to discuss

Think of the last time someone gave you an honest, and sincere compliment. How did this may you feel?

Who is the person in your life that compliments you most often? How do you feel about them?
