Unit Rate in Math

Sunday, July 24, 2016
I created a quick video definition of unit rate in math.

Unit rate is a ratio used in math to compare quantities in which the second quantity is one.

Common examples include,

  • Miles per hour
  • Earnings per hour
  • Cost per gallons or litre

Math Words-Harmonic Mean

Wednesday, January 13, 2016

The Harmonic Mean is a type of average.

  • It is the reciprocal of the arithmetic mean of the reciprocals.

Follow these steps to find the harmonic mean of a set of numbers.

  • We will call the set of numbers n
  • Add the reciprocals of the numbers in the set of numbers
  • Divide n (amount of numbers in the set) by the total of adding the reciprocals

For example
½ + ¼ = ¾
2÷ 3/4 = 2/1 * 4/3 = 8/3 = 2.6667

Math Words-Reciprocal and Multiplicative Inverse

Thursday, January 7, 2016

A reciprocal can also be called a multiplicative inverse.

The reciprocal of a number is created by dividing one by the number.
For example the reciprocal of 8 equals 1/8

When you have a fraction you can create it’s reciprocal by flipping the fraction.
For example the reciprocal is 2/3 = 3/2
Or the reciprocal of   3/4 = 4/3

Any number times its reciprocal equals 1

Use a reciprocal when solving an equation when the coefficient of the variable is a fraction.

2/3x = 4
Multiply both sides by the reciprocal
(3/2*2/3x) = 3/2*4
X = 6

A reciprocal is also used when you divide fractions
You Keep Change Flip
2/3 ÷ 3/4 = 2/3 x 4/3

Math Words-Conjugate

Friday, January 1, 2016

In algebra, a conjugate is created by switching the sign of another binomial.

For example, the conjugate of ( a + 4) = ( a - 4), or the conjugate of (b-5) = ( b +5)

Math Words-Coordinate Plane

Thursday, December 31, 2015

In this video you will learn about the coordinate plane.

Coordinate plane
The coordinate plane is a two-dimensional surface for the purpose of plotting lines, points, and even curves.
A coordinate plane has an x-axis, and y-axis, which are used to locate points on a coordinate plane. A point is named by two numbers called an ordered pair.
The x-axis is the horizontal scale, and the y-axis is the vertical scale.
The point where the x and y axis cross is called the origin.

Math Words-Complementary and Supplementary Angles

Wednesday, December 23, 2015

I started a new series of video in which I create video definitions. I have found it helpful if I can see a picture of a Math definition. Each video is around 30 seconds and I hope will help people get a better understanding of a Math concept.

In the video above you will learn the difference between complementary and supplementary angles, and a quick method for remembering the difference between the two.

Math Video Definitions-Angle Bisector-Right Angle

Wednesday, December 9, 2015
I have recently started creating Math video definition videos. The videos are fun to make, and provide a short visual definition to Math words. I'm a very visual learner, and I figured if seeing a definition in video format helps me, it would also help others.

Here are two video definitions I recently created.

Math video definition-Right Angles

A right angle is an angle that measures exactly 90 degrees.

Angle Bisector

An angle bisector is a line or ray that cuts an angle in half, thus creating two smaller equal angles.

I'm open to suggestions. If you have a Math word that you would like to see defined, please leave a comment below.
Thanks

Here is a link to all of the Math definitions I have created to date.
