Get Your Students Moving with Around-the-Room Activities
Keeping students engaged can be a challenge, especially when reviewing content. One of my favorite strategies is an Around-the-Room Activity because it gets students out of their seats, actively participating, and thinking about the content at the same time.
How It Works
Place question cards around the classroom by taping them to the walls, placing them on desks, or spreading them throughout the room. Each card contains a question and an answer.
Students begin at any card and read the question. They then search the room for the card that contains the correct answer. Once they find it, they read the question on that card and continue the process.
The activity continues from card to card until students have completed the entire set. If all questions and answers are matched correctly, students will end up back at the card where they started.
Why Students Love It
Students enjoy the movement and challenge of finding the next card. The activity feels more like a game than a worksheet, which helps maintain interest and motivation. Because students are actively searching for answers, they stay focused on the content throughout the activity.
Why Teachers Love It
Around-the-room activities are easy to implement and work well for:
- Review days
- Test preparation
- Learning stations
- Substitute plans
- Early finishers
- Cooperative learning
As students move around the room, teachers can easily monitor progress, answer questions, and identify concepts that may need additional review.
Benefits of Around-the-Room Activities
- Increases student engagement
- Encourages active learning
- Adds movement to the classroom
- Reinforces key concepts
- Provides immediate feedback
- Appeals to a variety of learning styles
Whether you're teaching science, math, social studies, or language arts, around-the-room activities are a simple way to make learning more interactive and enjoyable while helping students practice important skills.
If you're looking for a review activity that combines movement, engagement, and content practice, give an Around-the-Room Activity a try. Your students will be learning, moving, and having fun at the same time!
