These birds fly a very long way

The world celebrated when Charles Lindbergh completed a flight of over 3000 miles between New York and Paris. For a bar-tailed godwit, this flight would not even reach halfway on their yearly journey from their summer home in Alaska to their winter spot in New Zealand.

A male Bar-tailed godwit was tracked on his flight from Alaska to New Zealand. The flight was measured at 7500 miles and required 11 days of non-stop flying from the bird.

The common swift holds the record for the longest time flying. During their 10-month migration from Europe to sub-Saharan Africa and back these birds will stay in the air for up to 10 months.

What is the best long distance running animal?-Daily Science Fact

Wednesday, December 23, 2020

After researching this question I'm calling it a tie between dogs and humans.

Certain dogs are capable of running very long distances, Siberian huskies and Alaskan malamutes are capable of running 100 to 125 miles in one day for 9 or 10 days in a row during certain dog races like the Iditarod Trail Sled dog race.

Sled dogs

Humans have run comparable distances. Thousands of humans complete 100-mile races each year and several ultra-marathoners have completed races of 300 plus miles.

Therefore, I'm calling it a tie between dogs and humans.

However, wolves can also cover great distances of 30 or 40 miles in a day. Unfortunately, there are not any organized races for these animals and we don't know how far they could run if they trained and entered a very long race. Therefore, they get an honorable mention.

Some beetles live for 30 years but I don't know many people who keep them as pets.

Ant queens can live 50 to maybe 100 years and many people enjoy ant farms so I will declare the Ant Queen the winner of the longest living insect pet.

Daily Science Fact: Do stick insects sleep?

Tuesday, December 22, 2020

Do stick insects sleep

Scientists that study insects agree that some insects do sleep or at least rest. However, what about stick insects?

The answer is that we don't really know.
What is known by careful observation is the stick insects appear to rest when they show no activity. In other words, stick insects have periods during the day with no movement or activity. Is this sleep or rest?
Because insects don't have eyelids they don't close their eyes but otherwise, the insect can appear asleep.

Sleep and rest are vital for humans and insects in order to restore our bodies and remain sharp mentally.

Most ants can survive underwater for at least 24 hours, some can survive even longer. Ants don't have lungs, but instead breathe through openings called spiracles. They survive floods and other water emergencies by shutting the spiracles and going into almost a camatose state until oxygen is avaliable again.

Sunday, October 2, 2016

When you wake you are about 1 centimeter taller than when you went to bed. During the day the Earth's gravitational force compresses your spine and cartiledge in your joints and backbone which causes the dreaded shrinkage.
